Over the top sexy patient information booklet of the day:

I see what the pharmaceutical company was going for. Endometriosis, it’s painful…like thorns wrapped around your waist straight down to your V-line. But really, its not condoms. Sex won’t sell it. Teens aren’t buying it. I’m not a woman with endometriosis, but this cover brought few medical thoughts (let alone comforting ones) to mind.  When handed it and told to read about how patients feel about their disease, I almost wondered out loud if Mena Suvari’s character from American Beauty had the disease.

Given that every story in the booklet mentioned how painful sex was, I concluded that the cover was designed by either muppets or an endometriosis patient hoping her needy 13 year old son would be enticed to pick it up, have a read and be a little less demanding of Mom during bouts of pain.

Now, I enjoy when poorly thought out bits like this come from the hands of a pharmaceutical rep. I view them as more foe than friend, so scoffing at things like this has become somewhat of a guilty pleasure. But then, I opened it and found this 3D image right there on page two:

Nice.

I enjoy the art in Netter’s, but this 3D image opened me up to what an anatomy text could be. It would have made first semester dissection more interesting and more educational. Someone has to get on making a supplement with 3D images like this one.

And it came from a pharmaceutical rep.
